Eco-Friendly Compostable Drinking Straws and Compostable Plastic Straws
Frequently asked questions about compostable straws:
Are paper straws biodegradable?
Yes, certified paper straws are biodegradable and commercially compostable. Unlike traditional plastic straws that linger in the environment for centuries, paper drinking straws from Green Paper Products are BPI-certified to meet ASTM D6868 standards, breaking down naturally in a commercial composting facility within 180 days without leaving chemical residues or microplastics. However, paper straws will not biodegrade quickly in an airtight landfill.
What is the difference between paper, PLA, and PHA compostable straws?
While all three are eco-friendly alternatives to petroleum plastic, they use different renewable materials and disposal methods:
• Paper Straws: Made from FSC-certified paperboard. Sturdy, classic option ideal for cold drinks, sodas, and iced tea.
• PLA (Polylactic Acid) Straws: Clear or colored straws made from corn starch bioresin. They feel identical to traditional plastic but require commercial composting facilities (heat and microbial action) to break down.
• PHA (Polyhydroxyalkanoate) Straws: Plant-based straws fermented from natural canola or vegetable oils. Unlike PLA, PHA straws are certified home compostable and marine-degradable, meaning they break down naturally in soil, backyard compost bins, or ocean water without specialized industrial processing.
Can compostable straws be recycled with regular plastics?
No. Compostable straws (whether paper, PLA, or PHA) cannot be placed in municipal blue recycling bins. PLA and PHA melt at different temperatures than petroleum plastics (PET #1 or Polypropylene #5) and will contaminate the recycling stream. Traditional plastic straws are also generally too small to be sorted by standard recycling machinery and end up in landfills. Used compostable straws should always be sent to an organic compost facility or home compost bin (if PHA-certified).
Do compostable straws break down in the ocean?
Most standard compostable straws (including paper and PLA) are certified specifically for municipal composting, not marine degradation. However, PHA compostable straws are certified marine-degradable and will naturally break down in ocean water if they inadvertently escape the waste stream. That said, municipalities vary in their regulations, and some regions prohibit all single-use disposable straws regardless of material. Please check local ordinances in your area.
How do I choose the right size and type of compostable straw?
We offer a full range of diameters and packaging formats to fit your beverage program:
• Cocktail & Stirrer Straws (5"–5.75"): Best for bars, mixed drinks, and short tumblers.

• Jumbo & Smoothie Straws (8.5"–10"): Wide-diameter straws engineered for thick milkshakes, boba, and smoothies.
• Individually Wrapped vs. Bulk: Available in hygienic paper-wrapped options for takeout and food delivery, or unwrapped bulk packs for self-serve dispensers.

What are the best eco-friendly alternatives to plastic straws?
The top eco-friendly alternatives to traditional single-use plastic straws are:
-
PHA Straws (Marine-Degradable): Plant-based straws fermented from canola and vegetable oils (such as Phade®). They look, feel, and perform identical to plastic straws, but are certified home compostable and marine-biodegradable—breaking down naturally in soil, home compost, or ocean water without requiring industrial heat.
-
Durable Paper Straws: Made from multi-ply, FSC®-certified paperboard. Modern paper straws are designed to hold their structure in cold drinks, sodas, and iced teas without quickly turning soggy.
-
PLA Plant-Plastic Straws: Made from renewable corn starch bioresin. They offer the transparency and feel of classic plastic and are BPI-certified for commercial composting facilities.
-
Agave Fiber Straws: Upcycled from post-industrial agave fibers from tequila production, providing a sturdy, heat-tolerant, and biodegradable option for cocktails and cold drinks.
Green Paper Products supplies certified compostable straws in standard, jumbo, giant smoothie, boba, and cocktail sizes—available in both hygienic paper-wrapped cases for takeout and unwrapped bulk packs for self-service dispensers.
